From RAW to Mono

Writer's picture: Rob ColeRob Cole

How did I transform this rather bland looking RAW file from my Canon EOS7Dii into this dramatic black and white image?

Original RAW file.

Finished image processed in On1 Photo Raw editor.

First step was to open the editor and start to work in the Develop panel. Some adjustments made here to the Tone and Colour.

A little boost to the contrast, reduced the highlights, nothing too major here.

Next, into the Effects area for the black and white conversion.

A boost to the yellow lightened the sand a little while reducing the aqua and blue really turned the sky moody.

A boost to contrast again and an increase in the detail slider brought the image to life.

Staying in the Effects, a little vignette was added to draw the viewer into the image.

What do you think of this blog post. Helpful? Basic? I'm interested to know.
